About Rangpur

Rangpur, located in the northwestern part of Bangladesh, holds a significant place as one of the major cities in the country and Rangpur Division. With a history dating back centuries, the city has witnessed remarkable milestones and holds a deep-rooted cultural heritage. The journey of Rangpur as a district headquarters began on December 16, 1769, when it was officially declared as such. In 1869, Rangpur achieved another milestone by becoming one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh. The iconic municipal office building, erected in 1892 under the guidance of Raja Janaki Ballav, Senior Chairman of the municipality, stands as a testament to the city’s rich architectural heritage.

Throughout its existence, Rangpur has played a vital role in the region’s development. In 1890, the Shyamasundari canal was excavated to enhance the town’s infrastructure. Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu, the first mayor of Rangpur City Corporation, contributed significantly to the city’s progress. Today, Rangpur City Corporation stands as the second-largest city corporation in Bangladesh, covering an area of approximately 205 square kilometers. Rangpur is renowned for its unique offerings. The city takes pride in its Shataranji, a traditional hand-woven fabric known for its exquisite craftsmanship. The region is also famous for its succulent Haribhanga mangoes, refreshing Rangpur fruits, and thriving tobacco industry. With such diverse cultural and natural attractions, Rangpur has earned the affectionate nickname of “Baher Desh,” meaning “the land of beauty.”

The city is home to notable educational institutions, including Begum Rokeya University and Rangpur Cadet College, situated in the southern part of the city. Formerly the headquarters of the Greater Rangpur district, the region underwent administrative restructuring, leading to the establishment of Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, and Rangpur districts. Historically, the greater Rangpur region faced economic challenges due to frequent flooding until the construction of the Teesta Barrage in the 1990s. However, the district boasts coal reserves, contributing to its potential for future economic growth. Rangpur houses a large military cantonment and notable attractions like Ghagot Park (under military surveillance), Carmichael College, Tajhat Palace, Ciklee Water Park, and Rangpur Zoo.

That said, Rangpur takes pride in its flourishing handicraft industry, particularly Shataranji, which recently received recognition as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh. This acknowledgment further highlights the city’s commitment to preserving and promoting its unique cultural heritage. Rangpur stands as a city that not only cherishes its historical significance but also looks towards the future. With its rich cultural tapestry, breathtaking landscapes, and emerging economic prospects, Rangpur continues to be a place of pride for Bangladesh.
