About Barisal

Barisal, officially known as Barishal, is a significant city situated on the banks of the Kirtankhola River in south-central Bangladesh. It serves as the largest city and administrative headquarters of both Barisal District and Barisal Division. With a rich history, Barisal is one of the country’s oldest municipalities and river ports, earning it the nickname “Venice of the East” or “Venice of Bengal.”During the period of British rule in India, Barisal municipality was established in 1876. Later, on 25th July 2002, it was upgraded to a City Corporation. Today, Barisal stands as Bangladesh’s third largest financial hub, following Dhaka and Chittagong. The city encompasses 30 wards and 50 mahallas, housing a population of approximately 533,000 people according to the 2023 national census. The 2018 voter list of the city election indicates around 250,000 eligible voters. Spanning an area of 58 square kilometers, Barisal has a vibrant urban landscape.

Barisal is characterized by its flat terrain, with an elevation of merely 1 meter above sea level. Schools in Barisal Admission Process

 

Admission into Barisal or Bangladesh in particular is based on Lottery system for both government and non-government schools.

 

 

  • Non-government schools in metropolitan areas and Sadar upazilas will come under the central lottery. However, non-government schools that are not part of the central lottery will also need to hold a lottery through committees approved by the education ministry.
  • Applications for both the government and non-government schools will have to be submitted using the website “gsa.teletalk.com.bd”.
  • Students would be able to select five schools against one form. The price of a form has been set at Tk 110 and the fee can be deposited from Teletalk prepaid mobile phones.
  • Children aged six and above will be allowed to enroll in Class I.
  • For the past decade, admissions to Class I have been taking place via lottery all over the country. Last year, the government introduced the lottery system for all classes of secondary schools.
  • However, the admission process at government primary schools is entirely different. The schools enroll all students who apply and no admission test is required.

 

 

Essential Documents Required for Admission in Schools in Barisal

  • Complete set of academic transcripts or report cards for the past 3 years of school
  • Identification:
  • studentʼs photo identification page of all passports held and visas for Bangladesh
  • both parentsʼ photo identification page of all passports held and visa for Bangladesh
  • both parentsʼ  National ID Card (if applicable)
  • Copy of Speech or language, psycho-educational or special needs evaluations, and or records (if applicable)
  • A completed Admission Form
  • A complete set of academic transcripts or report cards from the previous school

  • Student’s passport size photograph(s)
  • Parents’ passport size photograph(s)
  • Payment of Admission Fee.
